Prompt evaluation and treatment of work-related injuries utilizing IWIN or its associates results in the safe and timely return of the injured employee to the workplace. Since the cost of lost work days to an employer can exceed the medical costs for an average workers compensation claim, IWIN’s goal as a company is to see lost work days eliminated or kept to a bare minimum. In addition, international research shows that injured workers recover faster and more effectively if they maintain contact with their workplace and their normal working routines when possible.
One of the major controllable causes of extended lost work days is the breakdown in communication among medical staff treating the patient. During the course of care a typical patient may see a doctor, a therapist, a diagnostician and a clinician yet, at IWIN, communication is constant and uninterrupted since all these fields work together within the same building under the same management, using the same protocols. There is no longer a delay in treatment while waiting for a report from another facility in regards to a particular patient.
A significant cause for extensive lost work days and possible OSHA recordables occurs when clinicians and providers who do not specialize in occupational health provide treatment to an injured employee. IWIN’s providers are trained to treat patients using the ‘best-practice’ guidelines provided by our Medical Director, thus guaranteeing that each patient receives the identical care for the same issues. Utilizing occupational health physicians and staff who specialize in and only treat work-related injuries has proven to reduce not only lost work days but a number of other associated costs as well, including the unnecessary dispensation of narcotics.
IWIN is the first and only organization in Central Illinois utilizing occupational health specialists with a “one stop shop” concept. Providers and clinicians float between the Peoria and Normal clinics to ensure both are maintained at the same high standard. Patient follow-up is designed to increase productivity through timely medical intervention and rehabilitation. No patient is released at MMI (maximum medical improvement) unless both the medical provider and the physical therapist agree. A strong and continual communication exchange between IWIN’s departments, the patient, and the employer can help reduce the risk of future legal and compensatory claims.
